She began singing at age 4. Her mother was encouraging her to take her to an audition with Sesame Street. When she was 6 year old, she began her acting career as a regular actor on the PBS children's educational program Sesame Street. She performed in many Broadway shows that were staged in New York City, including Fences (with James Earl Jones and later Billy Dee Williams) and Orfeo del Campo (off-Broadway). When she was seven, she won Star Search. She received the rating of four stars when she returned for another time.
